This is an office building for a holding company that oversees logistics companies, with its headquarters in Mitaka City. The site faces a prefectural road and is long from north to south. The first phase of the plan involves dividing the site in order to make effective use of it in the future, and then gradually drawing in designated roads and expanding the apartment complex.
A holdings company is a system that encompasses a variety of companies, and therefore the architecture that represents the company should not be uniform, but should be perceived from many different angles. When planning the building, we felt that an architecture that embodies the reliability of work and strict rules of a company that originated in the logistics and transportation industries would be appropriate.
The building's character must not be lost in its surroundings, but it is also undesirable for it to stand out too much. Therefore, in order to satisfy conditions such as ensuring privacy and openness, taking noise and vibration into consideration, and avoiding an intimidating exterior to create an intimate building, the building has been given a different character on each side, despite having similar facades.
The highly visible north side has openings and walls that are repeated regularly, while the east side has openings and walls that are repeated with varying spans, in anticipation of the long elevation plan when the extension is completed. In both cases, the folded-plate exterior walls are carried directly into the interior. On the south and west sides, small windows and sliding windows appear in accordance with the neighboring houses and apartment buildings.
The building has a simple yet powerful structure, and the appearance of the building can be greatly changed depending on the furnishings, so we aimed to create a building that can withstand the passage of time as the headquarters of a company that has long been rooted in the local area.
