Peace Bridge Pedestrian Bridge Proposal

Hiroshima Peace Bridge Pedestrian Bridge International Design Proposal Competition

The footbridges we designed are intended to create a beautiful contrast not only in their allegorical significance, but also in their shapes and structural qualities. Both bridges feature gentle curves in both their plan and cross-section. These curves were not determined solely for aesthetic reasons, but were carefully chosen with the aim of subtly yet powerfully asserting the mechanical characteristics and structure of each bridge, particularly in their longitudinal shapes.

The arches of the upstream footbridge in particular raise the level of the mid-mountain, creating a stronger sense of sight to the Atomic Bomb Dome, and by crossing both the upstream and downstream bridges, the relationship with Noguchi's Peace Bridge becomes even more three-dimensional. The two bridges provide a gentle spatial continuity on both sides of the Motoyasu River, quietly asserting that bridge structures are not limited to simply serving as passageways, but can also be valuable spaces that offer a richer urban experience to the many people who visit.

Upstream bridge: 83.0m, single-span arch structure made of precast concrete. Downstream bridge: 91.0m, single-span suspended structure made of steel sandwich slab (in collaboration with 0110110architects and Jun Sato Structural Design Office).
